California Clears Way for Inmate Firefighters to Enter Profession Upon Release

The west coast is experiencing record-breaking wildfires. California has a decades-long firefighting prison labor program in which inmates can volunteer to fight these fires.


On Friday, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed CA AB2147 (19R) allowing prisoners who fight fires while incarcerated to have their records expunged after serving time so they have an easier path to becoming regular firefighters upon release.
