Increased Federal Presence in Portland Raises State Sovereignty Concerns

The plaintiffs in a new lawsuit in Portland hope to prevent federal agencies from engaging in law enforcement activities outside the scope of defending federal personnel or property. The Constitution limits the federal government's power to a list of enumerated powers and the 10th Amendment reserves any power not specifically under federal control “to the states” or “to the people.” This is the basis of the conflict in American politics over "states' rights." We are seeing an unusual reversal where the left is calling for state autonomy and the right for federal control. Folks on both sides should remember that precedents set today will be remembered in the future when the roles may be reversed back.
