Thursday Event, The State of Mental Health

"The Corvallis Advocate is hosting a public event concerning the current state of mental health within our community on Thursday, April 25. The event will feature local therapist Jana Svoboda, who has nearly 35 years of experience in treating mental illness. Svoboda recently spoke to the Advocate for our piece, Inpatient Program Cuts at Sam Health. (https://corvallisadvocate.com/2019/inpatient-program-cuts-at-sam-health/)

Mental Health America, an advocacy group, ranked Oregon as having the highest rate of mental illness in the country, while ranking us 16th in access to care. Our overall mental health ranking is 49th, in conclusion of a variety of factors. The Treatment Advocacy Center says that 50 inpatient beds per 100,000 people are needed to adequately treat mental illness within that population, while Oregon merely has 16.2. They also state that Oregon incarcerates more people with mental illness than we hospitalize.

Jana Svoboda will be speaking about the gap between the mentally ill and the services required to treat these illnesses, and will be taking questions from the public. The event will take place at Old World Deli in Corvallis on April 25 from 7 to 8:15 p.m. Stay tuned on our website for possible additions to the event."
